Colts name Manusky defensive coordinator

02/02/2012 - Indianapolis, IN (Sportsbook Betting Lines) - The Indianapolis Colts have hired Greg Manusky as defensive coordinator.

The Colts named Bruce Arians offensive coordinator earlier this week.

Manusky was the defensive coordinator of the San Diego Chargers last year. He held the same position with the San Francisco 49ers from 2007-10.

This past season, San Diego's defense ranked 22nd in the league in points allowed (23.6) and 16th in yards allowed (346.6).

"I met with Greg yesterday and today with Coach (Pagano). I really feel good about him being a part of this," said general manager Ryan Grigson. "(He is) a great fit. He's versatile within the scheme, 3-4, 4-3. It's part of the philosophy of not trying to put a square peg into a round hole. He lines right up with that. He's a football guy, passionate, fire in his eyes. You know when you sit with him for two seconds he's an intense football coach. He's ready to come in here and do some great things with us."

Manusky started his coaching career as linebackers coach with the Washington Redskins in 2001, then joined San Diego in the same role from 2002-06.

The 45-year-old Manusky was a linebacker and a standout special teams performer during his 12-year playing career with Washington (1988-90), Minnesota (1991-93) and Kansas City (1994-99).

Also on Thursday, Grigson named Roy Anderson secondary/safeties coach and Marwan Maalouf special teams coach.

Colts give the ‘D’ its due

The Indianapolis Colts know that winning the Super Bowl last season put a huge target on their backs, and they expect opponents to go all-out to knock them from the top of the mountain.

They’ll get their first test from the New Orleans Saints this Thursday night. The defending champs had nothing but good things to say about the New Orleans defense this past week, praising their opponents’ pass rush and run-stopping abilities.

"They play very aggressively," head coach Tony Dungy told the New Orleans Times-Picayune. "They play a lot of man-to-man coverage, and they come after you. They have good pass rushers, and they're going to try to pressure us, I'm sure."

Both center Jeff Saturday and quarterback Peyton Manning gave New Orleans’ front four props, admitting keeping guys like Will Smithand Charles Grant contained would be a tall task for the offensive line.

New Orleans ranked second in total defense during the preseason at a sportsbook, allowing just under 233 yards per game. Last season, the defense finished 11th in the league after giving up 307.3 yards and 20.1 points per contest.

Not so sound on the ground

If Indianapolis' efficient offense has a weakness it has to be its running attack. The Colts one-two-punch of Dominic Rhodes and Joseph Addai is no longer, leaving the bulk of the carries to Addai, the second-year back out of LSU.

Brees says bring it on
